Contents Intro.

Emails have become a common means of communication, and althoughemails are different from traditional letters, they still require tactand politeness. This special lecture is designed to help internationalemail writers who write in English gain confidence in writing emails.Emails must be right for different situations and contexts in additionto being correct and clearly written. Emails can be polite andformal, polite and informal, or impolite and formal, and impolite andinformal. A matrix of these conditions is discussed as well as howthe English modals, - will, can, shall, may, might, would, could, andshould - affect levels of politeness and formality. An extensive hand-out of email English forms and useful email expressions will bedistributed among the participants.
