Nonmagnetic Layer Thickness Dependence of Exchange Bias and Coercive Fields in NiFe/NM/FeMn (NM = Cu, Ru) Trilayers with Long-Range Exchange Bias Effect

dc.description.abstract Trilayer films consisting of ferromagnetic NiFe, nonmagnetic Cu or Ru, and antiferromagnetic FeMn layers were prepared by sputtering technique. The long-range exchange bias properties were investigated with magnetization curve measurements for the trilayer films with various nonmagnetic layer thicknesses tNM between 0 and 12 Å. Both the exchange bias and coercive fields were observed in the magnetic hysteresis curves (M–H curves) of all trilayer films. When tNM was increased, the exchange and coercive fields determined from the M–H curves showed exponential decrease [exp(−tNM/λ)] with almost the same attenuation length λ. The cause of the observed behavior was discussed on the basis of numerical calculations using an extended Meiklejohn and Bean model in which distribution of the magnetic anisotropy in the antiferromagnetic layer was introduced. ja_JP
